Why Podcast?
To podcast or not to podcast?
Podcasting makes the most sense when content is episodic, needs to be generated and made available quickly, and should be downloaded.
Suggested uses:
- Capturing class sessions, especially when:
- information is covered rapidly or is very technical in nature, so repeated reference is helpful for students.
- various information types should ideally be integrated e.g. accompanying an audio file of a lecture with a presentation (see options for podcasting).
- Providing material or just-in-time information for assignments and class exercises, on a regular basis.
- The drop-box can provide a means for students to complete and submit assignments such as presentations and practice clinical work.
Other technologies are better suited to other needs:
- Instructors who use audio/video resources only occasionally and other online scenarios primarily (e.g. texts for readings, communication tools etc.) will probably find it more convenient to integrate their multi-media material in a course management system.
- For resources which will be reused from one year to the next, a course management system provides a better structure for organization and one which can be cloned.
- For items which should be streamed for reasons related to file size, copyright, etc. links should be placed on the University's streaming server.
If I capture my lectures and podcast them, why would anyone come to class?
Choosing to podcast is a question of teaching style. For many instructors, reproducing any part of the classroom experience would compromise it. Others have found that with a recording to refer to later, students are freed from note-taking to concentrate on what is said in the moment, and comprehension and engagement are much improved. If exchanges between the instructor and students are also captured, this might encourage some students to participate more but inhibit others.
Checklist of issues to consider in planning podcasting:
(This information will help IDeS staff to arrange optimal support):
What is the nature of my content?
What are the desired learning outcomes?
What type of podcasting would be best suited? (see options)
If class sessions will be captured, should this include exchanges with students?
Will students be asked to upload content as well, or only the instructor?
What is the time, size and location of the class?
