Podcasting Options

Here are 4 types of podcasts, and IDeS support staff can help you get started with them.

Audio Only
Just your voice.
Example:

This is the easiest setup. A wireless lavalier microphone connected to either the classroom computer or your laptop. The computer would run simple audio recording software during your lecture.

Enhanced Podcast
Your voice, linked with your PowerPoint or Keynote Slides. Students have the option of jumping to any slide in the presentation and the audio will stay in sync.
Example:

Note that this requires that you use a Macintosh laptop, rather than the computer in your classroom and software called ProfCast. There is currently no way to do this with a PC laptop. We are investigating PC options for the future. For the pilot, we may be able to provide you with a Mac Laptop, but if you are not comfortable on the Mac platform, it may not be the best way to go (see Screen recording, below, for an alternative).

Video Podcasts
A video podcast can be a camcorder recording or edited video. This type of podcast requires planning for the videotaping, and we would have to work out how to get this done on a case by case basis. Once the video is created, converting to an iTunesU format is simple.

Screen recording
Your voice captured and linked to a recording of anything displayed your computer.
Example:

This requires either a Mac or Windows laptop rather than the classroom computer. The laptop would be running software that can simultaneously capture your voice and what is happening on your computer screen. Since this option is available on either platform (still requiring a laptop), it is a good alternative to Enhanced Podcasting. It does not provide the ability to jump from slide to slide, but does allow students to fast forward and rewind.

For those capturing lectures live during class, a wireless lavalier microphone is recommended. For those producing podcasts in in an office or studio environment, there are a variety of inexpensive microphone options. The Enhanced Podcast format is currently only possible on the Mac platform.
